Northvolt Shifts Battery Development Focus from California to Sweden

Northvolt, a leading battery developer, has moved its battery development efforts from California to its main campus in Sweden. This decision marks a strategic shift as the company consolidates its research and development (R&D) and manufacturing processes into one central location in Sweden.

Since its founding in 2017, Northvolt has been advancing its lithium battery technology through its California-based subsidiary, Cuberg, which it acquired in 2021. Earlier this year, in April 2023, Cuberg announced a new initiative to create high-performance battery systems designed explicitly for electric aircraft, using lithium-metal battery technology to achieve high energy density and low weight.

However, Northvolt’s leadership believes that bringing all its battery technologies—lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and lithium-metal—under one roof at its Swedish Northvolt Labs will create a unique environment that fosters innovation and speeds development.
